The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 27 - 30, 1965 Carmen Back in Hospital



Wednesday, October 27, 1965

Cold, raw and snow flurries. I wrapped the port. Busy all day. Betty over to spring, running and waiting on Bill and Gordon. They got the tile in the well today. Betty better. Kennard called to get his grain. We got the beef into the freezer. Billie brought it home all cut and wrapped.



Thursday, October 28, 1965 CARMEN TO HOSPITAL



Bill and Gordon got done over to the spring. A nice well of water. Bill down to Gordon’s to work. We talked about building a house. Carmen has cold. Betty better. Betty and Carmen to doctors in PM. In evening Carmen came on with the asthma. Betty and I took her to the hospital again. It was so hard to leave her. Betty called at Ferns in early evening. Snow on ground this morning. Cold. I cleaned up the house.



Friday, October 29, 1965 COLD

A nice day, but cold. We went to town, paid taxes and many other bills. Billie sick today. Carmen has pneumonia but better the Dr. said today. Billie sent money to pay a bill at Raymond DEPCO. I paid Child Insurance of Hartford five dollars. Fern, Lloyd and Holly here. Bill worked at Gordon’s.



Saturday, October 30, 1965

A nice day, on the cool side. Betty and I to town. Bill worked at Gordon’s. Billie didn’t feel very good. We done up the work. Carmen a little better. MIKE CALLED to see how his daughter is. TOM NOLAN got killed last night. It could have been Mike.
