The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 19 - 22, 1965

Tuesday, October 19, 1965 Mike left bag and baggage again

Another very nice day. I ironed. Betty up to Auburn. She got a very nice letter from Mike. She went up as happy as could be but what did she find. He has been drinking. He wasn’t to be found. She came home very unhappy and sick. He came here late for his personal belongings. I still have hopes for the best for all of them. It seems Mike is hopeless. I am so upset about it. I’m still praying.

Wednesday, October 20, 1965

A very nice day. Fern and Lloyd called. Our well has 13 inches of water. Betty, Carmen and I to town in p.m. I mailed a letter to Dorothea. In evening I called the Ferns. Well dry at the trailer. I churned.

Thursday, October 21, 1965 Ferns birthday today.

Another very nice day. Betty and Carmen to the doctors. Carmen is okay now he said. But Betty and the expected baby aren’t doing good. Baby isn’t gaining weight. She is too nervous. I hope she will do better now that she is free of that Mike. I went to the bank. They dug down the well at the trailer. Billie still working over to Lawrence’s.

Friday, October 22, 1965

I had to go to town first thing this morning. It was a cloudy rainy day. Arnold Gardner called. I paid him for the work at the trailer. Betty and I to town in evening.
