The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 6 - 9, 1965

Sunday, June 6, 1965 WASHING MACHINE

A very nice hot day. I done up my regular work. Betty and Mike mowed the grass on their lot. Very pretty up there. Billie, Mike and Butch move my washing machine home from George LaFred (?). Talked with Dorothea. Callers at Mike and Betty’s, Fern and Lloyd, Kennard, Bill, Me, Val and wife.

Monday, June 7, 1965 Got DEED

A very nice day, HOT. I used my new washing machine. I liked it very much. To town today. Betty and Mike are now owners of property. Went to Norway and got their trailer. It will come Friday. Fern and Lloyd went to see it with us. Had heavy thunder showers in afternoon and evening. Carmen is better it seems since she has taken Dr. (?) medicine.

Tuesday, June 8, 1965

Another hot day. I churned, ironed, busy all day. Didn’t do much either. Betty took Carmen to the clinic. Dr. had gone so she didn’t see him. Tonight Joe De Grandi came up and located water on Betty and Mike’s property. Betty didn’t sleep today. Billie painted pigpen roof and flagpole tonight.

Wednesday, June 9, 1965

Another hot dry day. Betty couldn’t sleep. Tonight Gordon came up,  put the septic tank in tonight, dug their ditch. Sally and girls came.
