The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 30 - July 2, 1965

Wednesday, June 30, 1965

Cooler. Kind of a cloudy day with a slight shower. I settled the living room, cleaned some of the kitchen, cooked, churned etc. Billie worked for Lawrence. Tonight Bill painted the front porch floor. First time it was ever painted. Billie got the tie up ready for spraying. Tomorrow picked first quart strawberries.

Thursday, July 1, 1965 Mowed Hay, Spray Tie up, Painted Kitchen Floor

Fair and sunny. I worked in the dining room and kitchen. Getting ready to paint floors. Fern, Lloyd called, Aunt Ava called. Betty and Mike home and a weeks vacation started. Billie began the HAYING. Barn was sprayed or the tie up today. Bill painted kitchen floor tonight. I went to town today. Betty and I called at Ferns in evening. Betty and I up to the trailer after supper. Betty over to Joys in evening. Mike worked for Ervin this p.m.

Friday, July 2, 1965 Hay in and first mess of green peas

A beautiful day. I settled the kitchen, done the dining room floor, hall and stairs. Betty slept all day and moved my desk up to their house. She moved some more things up, was planning to go up to stay tonight, but went to Portland with Joy so didn’t. Billie got in some hay from Stan Whitney’s. Lawrence will have this if it gets wet. Mike worked for Ervin. First Mess of Peas.
