The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 20 - 23, 1965 Mike Gone

Friday, August 20, 1965

Kind of a hectic day. Nice weather. Betty and Mike made a new peace treaty. A near climax of separation. Betty took me to town tonight. A beautiful day. Not too hot. We ironed.

Saturday, August 21, 1965

A nice day. I baked beans. I made rolls, brown bread. Had Fern up. We went down to see Hayd and to the funeral home. In evening played password. Susan and Betty here. Astronauts went up.

Sunday, August 22, 1965

Cloudy all day. I done work, called at Ferns. Got ready and went to Hayd’s funeral. A big funeral. Amy and Pat rode home with us. Bill, Erwin, Dutch Pike and Jr. Mowatt were the bearers.

Monday, August 23, 1965 Mike gone

A very nice day. Dorothea and I did another big wash. Dennis is on his way we expect. About noon Betty came down. She had a very hectic night up at her trailer. Mike and his friend had a party. Betty is sick over it. They about wrecked her trailer and new hi-fi. She sent Mike away after he came back from work and had been fired. He just isn’t dependable. She sent Mike away last night.
