The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 15 - 18, 1965




Thursday, July 15, 1965

Carmen very sick with that cold and bad asthmatic and bronchitis. Very sick all day. We picked some string beans today. Didn’t do too much today, I made some cookies. Betty and Susan up to the trailer. Jeff is having a good time, he is so cute.



Friday, July 16, 1965

Beautiful day. Es called and Billie. Jeffrey is having a very good time here. Dennis called tonight. I picked some peas today. Dorothea and I washed today. Dorothea helped with all the work. It sure is good to have someone help. Betty, Jeff, Carmen and I to town after supper. Carmen is better and up today.



Saturday, July 17, 1965

Fair, some cloudiness. I cleaned up kitchen. Dorothea cleaned up rest of the house. Bill got pump for trailer and worked on it to get in finished. Billie over to help Lawrence to get some cows in Brownfield. Joy, Buddy and children called. Betty, Carmen, Jeff and I down to Ferns. Dorothea called on Barb in evening. Stanley Harmon called on Susan tonight.



Sunday, July 18, 1965

Picked things from the garden. It showered. Picked string beans. Bill worked up to Mike’s.
