The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 28 - 31, 1965

Saturday, August 28, 1965

MIKE CALLED. It was NO.  He called late in p.m. and he isn’t coming back. It is hard to face. We loved him as one of our family regardless of everything. Hope and pray for the best to come. Hope it is. Dawn and Fern here for supper.

Sunday, August 29, 1965

Cold and windy. Bill watched the astronauts come down. I done regular work. Owen and Helen called. Fern and Lloyd. Billie came home tonight, had a good time. Randy came and bought something from Betty.

Monday, August 30, 1965 Eyes Tested

A very cold day. Washed. Went down and had my eyes tested for glasses. Betty and Carmen called on Mrs. Parker. Miss Jeffie and Dorothea a lot. We are still waiting for something to happen to make a happy life of the Boutilier family. Eyes tested.

Tuesday, August 31, 1965 FROST last night

Fair in a.m., had a bad frost last night. Clouded up today. I cleaned up the playpen, churned. Hauled Betty’s groceries down from the trailer. Filled my cupboards. Amy went by. Tonight picked the squashes.
