The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 4 - 8, 1958



Tuesday, March 4, 1958

Cloudy, some rain. I did up the work. Billie and I went to town. Kennard and Dawn went with us. I cooked in p.m. Kay up here tonight. Betty got her glasses broken today. Raymond called in evening.



Wednesday, March 5, 1958

Cleared off nice today. Bill and I to town, paid some bills. Dolores called in p.m. In evening Fern and Lloyd called. Betty down to Dawn’s and got her hair cut. Billie and I down after her. Nancy and Lewis had a baby boy.



Thursday, March 6, 1958 New Maytag Today

A very nice warm sunny day. I made some pies, cleaned the electric stove. Bill went down to Potter and Thurlow’s and bought me a good secondhand Maytag washing machine. They delivered it in p.m. Bill got his car license. Hayd called, also (?) Hod Flint and Dennis.



Friday, March 7, 1958 Wedding Pictures Came

A nice day. Quite windy. I didn’t do a thing outside of regular work. Bill, Billie and Raymond worked on the washing machine to get the agitator out. Just like new now. Betty got her new glasses today. Got pictures of Dorothea and Dennis. Letter from D and D.



Saturday, March 8, 1958

Another nice day. I made cakes. Got my hair set over to June’s. Went to town in p.m. Charlie and Jean called today. Also Bob. Letter from Dorothea Aaron Dennis.
