The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 23 - 27, 1958



Sunday, February 23, 1958

Cloudy and snowed in p.m. Done up the work. Kennard and Dolores up from Portland, they called. Business not too good, they are going to be there only one more week. Bob and Blanche called.



Monday, February 24, 1958

Nice day except quite cold in a.m. I washed. Got word today Mr. J. B. Pike died in Florida.



Tuesday, February 25, 1958

A nice day. I ironed, cleaned up the house and cooked. Bill and I to town this a.m. Got some groceries. I called over to Aunt Linnie’s in p.m. A very nice day.



Wednesday, February 26, 1958 Donnie 14 Today

A very nice day. I done up the work. Billie made two kinds of ice cream and churned. Norma Wildberger called, also Kennie, Dot, Karen, Wanda Jean and Lorraine. Dawn called after supper. Bill worked for Hayd. Mr. Pikes body came today.




Thursday, February 27, 1958

A very nice warm day. I didn’t do much. Bill and Billie down to shovel off roofs at the cottages. Mr. Pikes funeral today.
