The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 21 - 24, 1958



Monday, April 21, 1958

Cloudy and foggy in a.m., cleared about eleven. I washed a big one. Very warm breeze, dried good. Hung clothes out back for first time. Ate on porch tonight, first time. Kennie up for dirt for planting. Bill and I called at Kennard’s. Billie smelting. School began. Letter and snaps from D&D.

Tuesday, April 22, 1958

Raining this a.m. I ironed. I went down and helped Fern to do with her pantry cupboards. I didn’t do much here at home. Bill worked today painting over to Jim’s. Our house paint came from LC Andrews.



Wednesday, April 23, 1958

Rained and Bill didn’t work. He puttied windows and painted the windows. I cleaned refrigerator, electric stove and cupboards and draws in the kitchen. Billie and Raymond gone smelting tonight. Had a lot of nice smelts for supper tonight.



Thursday, April 24, 1958

A very nice day. I churned, washed the bedding etc. today. Dawn called. I cleaned in Betty’s room and the yellow bedroom upstairs. Billie smelting again tonight, had smelts for supper. Billie worked at Chet’s. Bill painted tonight.
