The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 5 - 8, 1958 Block Fires



Saturday, April 5, 1958

Another nice day. In a.m. I cooked, washed kitchen floor, churned. Milan and Betty over to Fryeburg. In p.m. Milan and Betty called on Bob and Fern. In evening Milan, Betty and I up to Aunt Ava’s and Ken and Dolores’s. Betty C and Norma to movies. Verna had a girl this p.m.



Sunday, April 6, 1958

Very nice and sunny in a.m. Betty and Dawn to the sunrise service and breakfast. Fire in the Richard and Jennifer Johns block, also the Parson block. Milan’s folks left for home about 1 PM. Kennie and Dot here for dinner. Fern and Lloyd here in p.m. Rained and then snowed in p.m. in evening.

Monday, April 7, 1958

Another mean nasty dismal day. I washed, to town in p.m. Billie over to North Bridgton and Norway with Kennard. Ken and Dolores here in a.m. Bill worked. Dawn and Dave came and brought Betty home. Bill worked.



Tuesday, April 8, 1958

Cloudy. I cooked, got the clothes in and ironed in p.m. It was quite sunny in p.m. Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis called. Kennie, Dot, Jean and Karen called. Bill worked.
