The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 13 - 16, 1958



Sunday, April 13, 1958

Done up the work. A very nice sunny day, snow went a lot. Awful windy. Kennard here for dinner. Kennie, Dot up all after supper and called. Bill and I down to Lloyd and Ferns in evening. Os sick in bed.



Monday, April 14, 1958

I washed, got a letter from Dorothea and Dennis. Cooked and churned. Bill worked. Betty not home at all today. I wrote letters after supper. I got clothes in. Bill and Billie trimmed pine trees.



Tuesday, April 15, 1958

A very nice day, warm sunny all day. I got up early and ironed. Went over to Aunt Ava’s, we cleaned her two bedrooms and bathroom. Betty over to Amy Woods with Dawn. Billie cleaned up outside. Bill cut down a tree. Herbert Allen in accident. Billie took off storm windows.





Wednesday, April 16, 1958

Another nice day and warm day. I worked over to Aunt Ava’s, cleaned her living room. Billie raked the lawn. Betty made two cakes for us and for Holly’s birthday. Billie and Raymond gone smelting tonight, first time this spring. Billie and I called to see Rams (?).
