The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 28 - March 3, 1958



Friday, February 28, 1958 A Big Storm

Our kitchen stove went out. Bill had to clean it today. He is some lame. We got him some pills. Joy and Frank Wolff called today. No school in p.m. because of awful storm. Kennard and Dolores home for good this p.m. Wind blowed. Today snow drifted. A school bus in Kentucky tipped over into a river today, the driver and 23 children drowned.



Saturday, March 1, 1958

Cloudy not cold. Bill quite lame this day. Betty out in deep snow was Lassie. Billie did some shoveling. Raymond plowed out with Jeep. Got some nice snapshots from Deming’s. They all were sick out there this past week. Billie sold pigs to Chet.



Sunday, March 2, 1958

Cloudy. Not much to do. I got dinner, did up work, wrote to Esther’s folks and Susan and Dorothy and Dennis. Billie and Betty downtown. Raymond called, also Irene and Ernest Batchelder. Betty cleaned up upstairs today. Fern and Lloyd up a few minutes.



Monday, March 3, 1958

Cloudy. I washed, Bill helped. I cleaned up the rooms upstairs. Billie downtown, Kennard went with him. Town meeting today. The Maple Lane Farm being sold this spring, cattle and all.
