The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 19 - 22, 1958



Wednesday, March 19, 1958

A very nice day. Made a loaf of Graham nut bread. Cleaned up the downstairs. In p.m. Dolores came up and Fern. Also Raymond called. Betty and Holly to movies in eve. Billie tapped the Maple tree, at run good. Bill and Billie in and out all day. Aunt Ava’s chicks came today.



Thursday, March 20, 1958

Fair in a.m. Letter from Esther and family. In p.m. clouded up and windy, bad storms in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Delaware and Maryland coming Northeast. Bill and Billie boiled sap down outdoor made over 1 quart. Billie to town etc. Bobby called.



Friday, March 21, 1958

Another bad weekend storm. Schools closed at noon. A very bad storm high winds and snow. In Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York it was very bad. New Jersey and Pennsylvania declared state of emergency. Did regular work and sat. Raymond called in p.m. Bobby called.



Saturday, March 22, 1958 Billie 27 today

Cloudy with snow showers. Did up regular work. Kennard called. Herbert Moulton died in Florida. We had birthday cake for Billie. He went up to Chet’s and up to Waterford.
