The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 25 - 29, 1958

Friday, April 25, 1958

A very nice day but very windy, cold in late p.m. and early evening. I cleaned my room, dark bedroom and hallway. All done upstairs. Betty jumper shoes came. She went to movies with Kay. Billie got fence post. Bill painted tonight.

Saturday, April 26, 1958

A very nice day except windy and on the cool side. Billie cut fence post in a.m., over to Raymonds in p.m. and raked. Betty to town and Kay’s in p.m. also painted a little. Bill painted after he got home. Val called. Yesterday Pete, Edith and Justin called in evening.

Sunday, April 27, 1958

A nice day, still cool. I went to town in a.m. Billie over to Raymonds in a.m. Betty to church with Dawn. Bill painted. Betty cut Mama’s hair. Billie fenced in p.m. I wrote my letters. Daylight Time and I HATE it.

Oh what a day. Rained and turned to snow. Got about 2 inches. Bill didn’t work. Billie over to Norway and at Oxford to Twitchell’s farm. Kennard went with him. He bought some apples up to Morses. I didn’t do anything except regular work.

Tuesday, April 29, 1958

What a nasty day, ground all snow. I washed living room curtains and cleaned the kitchen ceiling. Bill didn’t work. He rode and Billie rode.
