The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 10 - 14, 1958



Monday, March 10, 1958

A very nice warm day. I washed in my new MAYTAG. Very good. I went down to vote. Also went to Portland with Blanche and the Whitney girls. Kennard called in a.m. Bill worked for Hayd. Billie helped Raymond. Letter from the Adair’s.



Tuesday, March 11, 1958

A very nice warm and sunny day. I wrote to D&D and Susan. I cooked in p.m. I ironed. Bill, Kennard and I went to town. In evening we called at Pete and Edith’s. Kay here all night. Billie bought a white head calf of Elmer Fogg.



Wednesday, March 12, 1958

Cloudy, not so warm. I cleaned up the house. In p.m. I called at Aunt Linnie’s. Billie worked at Chet’s. Bill making himself a grindstone to run by motor. He went down to Charlie’s.






Thursday, March 13, 1958

A nice warm day, some clouds. I made two pies. Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis called today. We had them stay for dinner. Billie working at Chet’s.



Friday, March 14, 1958

Letter from D&D. Cloudy. Kennard and Bill worked on the grindstone. Bill and I called at Rado’s in evening. Began to snow at 2:30 PM. Barb and her baby boy called. Cooked again today. Billie bought cow from Elmer Fogg.
