The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 15 - 18, 1958



Saturday, March 15, 1958

A snow white day. All snow everywhere. Snowed all day. Bill and Kennard finish the grindstone. Raymond called, also Bobby. Betty made a very good marble cake.



Sunday, March 16, 1958

Cloudy and snow flurries all day. Got dinner, churned, done up the work. Wrote my two letters. Fern, Lloyd up in p.m. Bob called in p.m., also Betty over to Aunt Ava’s and  Aunt Linnie’s. Joy called Bob and Blanche.

Robert and Blanche. Nanny use to say about Blanche, "She is such a GOOD woman."




Monday, March 17, 1958

Bill worked for Hayd. I washed. My new machine is great. In p.m. Billie and I called at Ferns and Aunt Ava’s and Dolores’s. Billie, Bobby and I went to town. I mailed letter and package to Dorothea. Chet got his pigs today. Cleared off.



Tuesday, March 18, 1958

It was cloudy in early morning, soon cleared and a very nice day. I cooked and ironed. Bill over to Raymonds and to town. He and Billie over to Harrison. Betty to the B. J. H. S. Concert tonight.
