The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 3 - 6, 1958



Monday, February 3, 1958

A nice day, cold. I washed. Bill down to Hayd’s again for a week if we don’t get snow. I washed and churned. Jane Walker’s funeral today. Rodney Arris came and got the TV tonight to repair it. Kay came up here and stayed all night.



Tuesday, February 4, 1958

Billie bought two pigs. A nice day but awful cold. I ironed, cooked, did other things. Billie had a physical today by Dr. Skillins. Rosalie Edwards called in p.m. Tonight Betty gave me from Billie, Dorothea and her a very nice enlarged photo in color of Donnie. I was just overjoyed with it.



Wednesday, February 5, 1958

Today got a letter from DOROTHEA. I spent the day at Ferns. She shortened my new dress Billie gave me for Christmas. A cold windy day. Billie got finished up with his physical today. Dawn called.



Thursday, February 6, 1958

A nice warm day. Mama went down to Ferns today. I gave the downstairs the clean up works, made a cake. Insurance man came. Billie helped Raymond. In evening Betty and I up to Dawn’s. Billie down to Lloyd's. Car theft case in paper involving Hartley Staley and Perkins. Mama got picture of Susan.
