The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 15 - 18, 1958 Betty Turns 15!

Saturday, February 15, 1958

Not so cold today. Bill worked. Betty didn’t get up very early. Billie sold a pig to to Jack Cadman today. Bobby plowed out driveway tonight. Kennie and dot called this a.m. Bill’s insurance check came back today.

A big storm all over New England. Big snowdrifts and snow got here about 11:30 AM. Snowed hard and heavy winds, drifts and all. I did regular work. Billie fishing. I wrote my letters. Bobby Smart called.

Monday, February 17, 1958 Betty’s 15 today.

Cleared off, and got colder. We went to town in a.m. We entertained Dawn Parks and son Steve, Mabel Nevers and son David. Betty got nice lot of gifts and had a good time. Raymond called also.

Fair not too cold. We, Betty, Bill and I went to visit DONNIE at Pineland Home in Pownal. I was so glad to see him. He was drowsy from medicine, so he didn’t pay any attention to us. I hope to find him up and better next time. His mother was there in a.m.
