The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 14 - 17, 1957



Tuesday, May 14, 1957

Fair in a.m. and cloudy in p.m. Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis here for the day. They enjoyed the cake very much and Mama gave them some gifts. I cooked custard pie, chocolate cake, hot rolls. I got the clothes in and sprinkled. Donnie bed and slept all forenoon, afraid he was sick but got up and okay. Got nice gift and card from Dorothea for Mother’s Day.


Wednesday, May 15, 1957

Cloudy and rainy in a.m. Billie didn’t work. He fenced here at home. Amy and Irvin down to see John. Not very good. Betty down to choir rehearsal. Had thundershowers, nice and warm. I ironed. In p.m. went to school entertainment with Blanche. Gordon up and plowed tonight.



Thursday, May 16, 1957

Cold, clear and windy. A pretty day. I cooked. Got some dandelions for supper. Dolores up and called this morning. John Linscott died last night in a Portland hospital.



Friday, May 17, 1957

Cold, nice clear day. I read the papers, cleaned the house, to town before supper. Shampooed my hair. Kay came up here tonight.
