The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 24 -28, 1957 Dorothea to Get MARRIED



Sunday, March 24, 1957

A very nice day. Quite windy. I did up the housework. Bill and Billie cleaned up around the yard today. Betty to S.S. church and youth group.



Monday, March 25, 1957

A good day except cold and windy. I watched. Dolores called in a.m. My order came from National Bellas Hess. I hung clothes out back today for first time. I was over to Aunt Linnie’s for evening. William Harmon elected to school board tonight at special town meeting.



Tuesday, March 26, 1957

Another nice day. I ironed and cooked, and started cleaning the cupboards. Betty up to the corner playing ball after school tonight. It evening I went over to Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis.



Wednesday, March 27, 1957

Cloudy most all day. I painted and cleaned rest of the cupboards. Also did the china closet. Betty raked and burnt leaves tonight. Donnie out with her tonight for first time this spring.



Thursday, March 28, 1957 Talked With Dot And Joe Tonight

A telephone call from California, Dorothea and Joe. Dorothea is very pleased as she and Joe are going to get married this weekend. It seemed so good to hear them. I cleaned the china closet draws and buffet. Did bureau draws. A very nice day.
