The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 20 - 23, 1957 Easter Sunday



Saturday, April 20, 1957

A very Hot day. Billie took off all storm windows and raked up all around. Put up the hen yard fence. Betty helped him. Also Betty cleaned off the back porch and put couch on it. I cooked, cleaned up the house. In late p.m. went to town got Betty a pretty brown linen suit for Easter Sunday. Kennard called in a.m.



Sunday, April 21, 1957 Joe leaves service today

It is a very nice hot day. Ate dinner on the porch. Betty dressed up in her new suit and off to church. Took some snaps. Moffat’s brought her home and called to see parakeets. Bill helped Lloyd fix pipes. Also he put roofing paper on porch roof. Billie didn’t do much today except to help Chet a little while. Joy and Bud called. He seemed like a nice young chap. Had nice ham dinner.






Monday, April 22, 1957

A nice day. I washed. Cleaned grain room and ironed in evening. Betty down to Kay’s all night. Billie went smelting with Dennis and Raymond. Very dry and hot.



Tuesday, April 23, 1957

Very hot. Down to Ferns, we cleaned her parlor. Uncle Os had pictures taken for 90th birthday. Parakeet egg laid TODAY. Roger Staley called here tonight with Betty.
