The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 19 - 23, 1957 Billie 26 Years Old



Tuesday, March 19, 1957

A very nice day. Dolores and I went to town today, she took me down to pay the light bill. I came home and ironed. Made some brownies. Cleaned up the house. Send letter to Dorothea and Es today.



Wednesday, March 20, 1957

A cold cloudy day. It snowed in Boston today and tonight. Just cloudy and cold in Maine. I cleaned some cupboards today in the kitchen. My house cleaning began today. Kay up here tonight from school. She and Betty went down to choir rehearsal. Got some snaps from Esther today of Billie and rest of family.



Thursday, March 21, 1957

A very nice day. I cooked. Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis called in p.m. Got the pork back tonight. Billie got paid today. My curtains came today from Sears, the sitting room and dining room. Kennard called in the evening.



Friday, March 22, 1957 Billie 26 years today.

A very nice pretty day. I cleaned up the house, made and decorated birthday cake. We had birthday cake and ice cream tonight. Tonight Billie took the Jersey heifer up to Dennis to breed to his Holstein bull. Insurance man called here tonight.



Saturday, March 23, 1957

Another nice day. Bill worked in a.m. over to Wilner’s. Billie worked for Chet today. Bill and I went to town this p.m. Kennard called in p.m. I cooked this a.m. Bill raked front lawn this p.m. today.
