The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 29 - April 2, 1957



Friday, March 29, 1957

A cloudy day. I did some more cleaning upstairs closets and drawers. Betty to choir rehearsal tonight. Aunt Ava moved her deep-freeze in today to the bedroom.



Saturday, March 30, 1957

This morning snow on the ground and still snowing. I got up early, did some cooking, went to town early. Got paper and pain for living room. Painted the living room.



Sunday, March 31, 1957

A nice clear day but cold and windy. Betty to church and S. S. Dot and Kennie called in a.m. Kay up here today. Betty down to her house all night. They went over to Pitt’s stable in p.m. Fern up in p.m. Bill and I papered the living room, got about half done. Bob Smith called. Ken and Dolores called. Bob Smart called.


Monday, April 1, 1957

Warmer. I did a big wash. Clothes dried good. I cooked. Dot, Lorraine, Karen and Wanda Jean called today. Got the clothes in. Bill and I papered some more tonight.



Tuesday, April 2, 1957

Rained and Bill home. He papered rest of living room. In evening we painted the floor. Billie didn’t work either. He helped Dennis in p.m. put pictures up in living room and shades. Washed windows.
