The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Monday, March 11, 1957

A very nice day. I washed. Lida called. Gave me $15 for Donnie’s use. Cleaned up the house today. Billie began working for Palmer.



Tuesday, March 12, 1957

Cloudy and rained some in p.m. I ironed in a.m., did up the work. Lawrence came to get the pig to butcher. In p.m. went to Portland to Dr. (?) Gordite for Mama and Betty’s eyes. Betty got a new pair of shoes. I sent an order today. Donnie down to Ferns in p.m. and to supper.



Wednesday, March 13, 1957

A very nice day. I cooked. Dolores came up in forenoon. In p.m. I went over to Aunt Linnie’s and helped her to do some dusting etc. About 5 o’clock Joe Adams called us from California that Dorothea is coming home for a week on a hop plane. Betty to choir rehearsal tonight. Bill got pills tonight.



Thursday, March 14, 1957

A very nice day. I cleaned up the house, cooked and watched for Dorothea. Forrest began on the ceilings, he got the sitting room nearly all done. Finished hauling Raymond’s logs today.
