The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 3 - 6, 1957



Wednesday, April 3, 1957
A very nice day. I ironed. Dolores up in a.m. In p.m. I put curtains up in living room and settled it. It looks so nice. Jane Walker fell, broke her hip.



Thursday, April 4, 1957 Nice Day

I cleaned and painted dining room. In evening went down to Ferns and to town. John March ran away with Roy Crosby’s wife. Bill painted rest of dining room woodwork after supper, in evening we painted the floor.



Friday, April 5, 1957

A rainy day. Bill stayed at home and painted kitchen. I put up the curtains in dining room and cleaned the yellow bedroom upstairs. Mrs. Bessie Proctor got killed in a car accident today, very slippery traveling. Billie worked. Kay up here tonight.



Saturday, April 6, 1957

Partly cloudy. Bill didn’t work. Billie did. Cooked, to town, put furniture in place in dining room. Cleaned up rest of house. Kay took her bird home with her today. Mama down to Ferns today for a few days. At night Bill and I painted the kitchen floor. Gray background with red designs. I did some cleaning in the kitchen.
