The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 24 - 27, 1957 Uncle Os Turns 90!

Wednesday, April 24, 1957

Another nice day, down to Ferns, we cleaned her living room and part of the dining room. Betty went to Portland today to take Roger Staley back to the State School for Boys. Today we got a letter from Dorothea, also some snapshots of Joe Adams.

Cloudy. Fern and I finished cleaning her dining room and cleaned her kitchen. Letter from Dorothea today. Parakeet egg.

A cloudy day and a EARTHQUAKE this morning. I didn’t work in Ferns. She was getting ready for a party. I cleaned up the house. Not much pep.

Saturday, April 27, 1957

Cleared off this morning. Been quite warm today. I cooked, done up the housework. In p.m. Mama went down to Ferns to wish Uncle Os a birthday wish on his 90th. Fern and Lloyd are having Open House this afternoon and evening. In p.m. Bill and I went to town. He got mad at me over bills and money. I decided he better pay the bills himself. Billie worked up to Chet’s today. Dorothea called tonight from California.
