The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 10 - 13, 1957



Friday, May 10, 1957 Rain Began Tonight

Cloudy not so hot. Dolores here this a.m. I cooked. My CHECK came today. Bill and I went down town today at noon. And after he got home we went down and got the groceries and done some others errands. I got a Althea plant for Mama’s Mother Day gift. Betty got (?) Joys phonograph tonight. She bought two new records, one was Marty Robbins “White coat and Pink Carnation”.



Saturday, May 11, 1957

Cloudy most all day. Bill worked. I did up the work. Bob here in p.m. and to supper. Fern and Lloyd called in evening. I went over to Aunt Linnie’s. Whitney’s called here.



Sunday, May 12, 1957

A nice day. Bill and Billie worked on fences. Betty to church in morning. Kay came home with her. Betty mowed lawns. Kennard called. Betty down to Kay’s all night.



Monday, May 13, 1957

A cloudy day. I washed but my clothes got wet and I couldn’t get them in. Awful heavy rain, some showers (thunder). I went downtown with Bill after he got home from work. Gordon’s family called.
