The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 19 - 21, 1992 Service for Phyllis

Thursday, November 19, 1992

A quite nice day. I done up regular work. I checked over some books etc. In p.m. Carlton came. I was glad to see him. I love him and feel so sorry for him. He has lost a lot of weight since Phyllis’s sickness. Carmen called in p.m. and got supper to going. She made a delicious tunafish casserole.

Colder this morning. A nice very clear day. I washed. This has been a nice sunny day, on the cold side. Dorothea came early and cleaned up the house. Changed the beds. She made brownies, and gave Billie his shampoo and washed his back. She washed the floors and it all looks so nice when she got done. Susan came and cut Dorothea’s hair. I hope will be a lot warmer tomorrow. A lot on the scanner today and almost every day. I like that very much.

Saturday, November 21, 1992 Phyllis’s Service

A cloudy day and it rained very hard in p.m. Today they had memorial service for Phyllis Osborne Smith at Tom’s Homestead. Mary Beth Wells was the minister. A very good service. Pieces were read by Carlton, Verna and Dorothea. Betty helped to write it. There was a lot of people, family, friends and relatives. Afterwards a nice buffet was served, very very good. We got home at about 4 PM. There was a very nice photo of her on the table. She was a very nice person, thoughtful and kind. This family all went. I didn’t do anything except regular work and got ready to go to the service.
