The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 18 - 21, 1992

Friday, December 18, 1992

A very nice sunny day except the wind blowed hard. Billie to the eye doctor in Portland. Dorothea took him. I wrote more cards for Christmas. I made at Jell-O. I was home alone while they were gone. Brogan home from school still sick. Carmen worked all night. I hope she gets some rest today.

Carmen just beginning to feel better. She didn’t go to work. She has been doing some clothes today. Dorothea came and cleaned. David came for coffee. Joy and Kathy called today. Dorothea got a good supper. It was a nice day, on the cool windy side.

It rained hard this morning. It began to clear about 10 o’clock and by noon it was nice and sunny. Walt up for coffee. Billie and I went for a ride down to Hiram with Betty. She bought a cupboard. I talked with Betty Smith on the phone. Nothing in particular. I wrote to Esther and to Zak this morning. Betty got a cupboard. We enjoyed the ride very much.

Dorothea came, she got the mail off and went to the bank for us. I did wash. Betty came and got the supper. Carmen’s folks are getting better from the flu. Arnold a dite still sick, they all have had quite a struggle with it. Betty took me down to her house and up to Dorothea’s to see their trees. Both places looked so nice, just beautiful.
