The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 30 - 31, 1992 End Of The Year

Wednesday, December 30, 1992

A dark miserable day. I didn’t do much. Just regular work. Carmen came and got the grocery list. The kids stayed here while she went. Something bothering her. She was kind of being in that unhappy mood. I can figure it out quite well. I feel so sorry for her. She shows the love for her two children. I hope she always will. I wish she could have the same shown to her. Betty to the doctor for her foot today. He told her what the problem was. I hope he will be able to help her. Walt and David both better. Carmen made another one of those delicious casseroles for supper.

Thursday, December 31, 1992 $489 old amount $499 new Social Security

Well this is the last day of 1992. I got my store list ready and Carmen done the shopping today. We got the new Social Security increase. It isn’t very much. I didn’t do much today as usual. Carmen cooked a turkey pie for supper. It was good. Also brought up a cake she made. She took the checks down and cashed them etc. Betty still lame. Dorothea got her house all cleaned up today. Betty had a few in for a New Year’s Eve party. Carmen, Kim, Arnold and Tom then they went to a party. Brogan came up and stayed all night, same as Kim, Carmen and Zak used to. A good New Year’s eve gift, a phone call from Zak. He has moved into a place of his own.

In May Carmen signed Brogan up for regular school. In April Betty and Carmen had their first customer. It was Kim Harriman. On Mother’s Day I got the scanner. I like it. Billie got two heifers and one had a calf.

Betty and Dorothea and Kim and Carmen cleaned the house for me this spring. We had a party for Brogan’s graduation. Kim had a baby shower for Carmen. Tom to school in New Hampshire, fire prevention. Brogan had two pet turkeys this summer. Kassie to the vet several times.

Zak worked at Cummings Dowel Mill in Norway. One day after Kim and Tom’s one year anniversary Cameron Alexander Crook Horton was born at Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway Maine at 3:25 PM. Carmen was very sick. We all love him very much. Jeff and his wife Ellen called today they are expecting in January.

They had two bedrooms made at the Ridge House for Brogan and Carmen. Esther and Cliff came to Verna and Bruds, came here on the 17th. A lot of rain all summer. Walt and Betty’s anniversary, 25th was celebrated, put on by their three children. On August 6 Cliff had a bad stroke. He was in the hospital here and died on September 14 at 5 PM. Zak left home for California on September 11, 1992. On September 8 Brogan started school, the first time. We all followed her.

Esther left for home early this morning September 10. She came home on September 15 because of the death of Cliff. His service was held September 21. President Bill Clinton elected on November 3. Cattle went.

Phyllis Osborne Smith died. They had Memorial service for Phyllis November 21 at Tom’s homestead. Nicholas Smith has had a bad year. His mind is mixed up, very confused. He was such a smart boy. BJ is living with her mother. She too is confused. She comes to see her father at times.
