The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 9 - 12, 1991 Brogan starts Humpty Dumpty School

 

Monday, September 9, 1991 BROGAN ALLYSSA HORTON WILLETTE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL

 

This morning Brogan went to the first day of school at Humpty Dumpty (nursery) at the Congregational Church on S. High St. She was very excited and pleased to go. Carmen, Betty and I went with her. I went with Betty when she took Kim and Carmen to the same school. Now they were grandchildren, this one today was my great-grandchild. I’m old old old. I am very pleased I could share this day with them for such a day as this. I loved it. Brogan grandmother (Dennis’s mother) is visiting her today.

 

 

 

Tuesday, September 10, 1991

 

Sunny and hot. I wrote to Es first thing this morning. Then I worked on that order. On the back porch. Brogan stayed at her grandmother and grandfather’s last night. Her mother had to work. Brogan and Betty came up and called.

 

 

 

Wednesday, September 11, 1991

 

Well up early, took my bath after I got my work done and got ready to go to Portland for Zack’s birthday. He will be 22 years Sunday the 15th. Also we all to gifts to him. Betty and Walt got a new box spring and mattress for his bed. Also Betty got him a egg crate pad for his bed. I got him a pair of pillows and cases.

 



 

 

Thursday, September 12, 1991

 

A quite nice day. Dorothea and Betty gone for their teeth appointment. Zack going from work to have his eyes checked for new glasses. Carmen to the hospital MCG hospital in Lewiston.
