The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 24 - 27, 1991 Fern Died and Her Funeral

Sunday, November 24, 1991 Fern Aleta Smith Yates

At 5:45 AM Fern died. She was at Dorothea and David’s home. Betty, Joy, Carmen was there when she died. She has had a long hard struggle to the end. She will be missed by the family. She was so good to them all and they were to her all her life. We will miss her.

Monday, November 25, 1991 AT FERNS IN EVENING

A quite nice day. We did a big wash. Dorothea here and Betty, Carmen and Brogan also. Rev. Dana Beth Wells here in p.m. to talk to me about Fern for her service tomorrow. Zac vacuumed today. He and Betty and Bro went shopping this p.m. for Thanksgiving. Billie had a bad day, his feet and nerves all up. Awful nervous. Dorothea is still up and all tired out from Fern’s sickness of the last week. Very hard. She has a lot of things to take care. We went down to the calling hours for Fern tonight. She looked as though she had suffered a lot. ALL HER FAMILY WAS THERE.

Wednesday, November 27, 1991 Fern’s funeral

It dawns sunny and clear this morning. On the quite cold side and a dite windy. Got ready and went to Fern’s funeral at 1 PM. A lot of relatives and some of her church friends were there. Had beautiful flowers. After the services all the people all backed up to Dorothea and David’s for a nice sociable gathering and lunch. Very good. All had a good gathering. David and Dorothea gave Fern a very good home and life for the past several years. She had the best of care and happy to be with them. We all loved her as she had no children. Her bearers were Walt, Tom, Zack, the Bracket boys, Weldon and Malcolm, and Steve the undertaker.
