The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 2 -5, 1991 First Day of School

 

Monday, September 2, 1991 Labor Day

 

Another long day. Done up the regular work, wash. Carmen called a little while then she had to go to work till seven then gone back to work at 11 to 7 Tuesday. Billie Joe and Nick are home. Betty and Eva called the Betty’s today. Charlene also called. Walt not feeling too good.

 

 

 

Tuesday, September 3, 1991 FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL

 

A nice day for the first day of school. Nick and BJ came up to see us when they were ready. Looks very nice all togged out. I went down to Betty’s to be with Brogan while she mowed her lawns but Carmen came. She only slept two hours. Carmen did the shopping for some things and done the work at the bank. Walt still not too good.

 

 

 

Wednesday, September 4, 1991

 

Got my hair cut and set today. Also glasses straightened and eyes checked. Very good 2020 vision he said. We had showers this p.m. Carmen here and got the supper. Dorothea called a minute. It got quite hot a.m.

 

 

 

Thursday, September 5, 1991

 

Foggy and wet in a.m. Then cleared away and the sun came out. Billie mowed lawns. Betty, Bro went to Windham, they asked me to go and I did. Carmen still working all these shifts. Carmen and Bro to the meeting at Brogan’s school.
