The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 10 - 12, 1991

 

Sunday, November 10, 1991 Zack moved from Portland.

 

Today Zack moved here from Portland to work for us. It was too much for Carmen. He got all moved. Arnold helped him.

 

 

 

Monday, November 11, 1991 FIRST SNOW, PERM, ZAC BEGAN WORK

 

A very miserable day. We got our first snow. It started as a bad rainstorm. Blowing wind. Then got very bad by p.m. and then snow came mixed with the rain. We didn’t get too much here. I took a bath. Carmen came and got me. I went and got my perm. Got home about noon and the storm got worse. Zac worked at Betty’s for her. Dorothea went and got her teeth work started. Fern not too good. Tonight Zac got a very good supper. Ate too much. Carmen had a supper and guests were Hortons, Smith and Harrimans.

 

 

 

Tuesday, November 12, 1991

 

It has cleared up and sunny. Carmen and Betty up early and gone to school. They’ll be home tonight. Today Zac got the refrigerator and stove all done. Also he did the washing. He done all the other work except making the beds. In evening he went to his pool meeting. Fern better today, the doctor gave her some pills. Carmen and Betty got home from school at about 7 PM. Brogan here all day. A busy day and a lot of talking.
