The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 29 - October 2, 1991 Betty Starts New Adventure

 

Sunday, September 29, 1991

 

A quite nice day. In p.m. Betty, Dorothy here and I went over to Norway and around to see the leaves and a couple buildings Walt was looking at. When I got home lo and behold Kim had come and she had prepared a very nice pot roast supper she and Tom planned. We had that and a nice dessert.

 

 

 

Monday, September 30, 1991 Betty goes today on her first new phase of her life

 

A good frost last night. It dawned nice and sunny this morning. Very cold. I washed. Carmen and Arnold gone to the Fryeburg Fair. Today Betty goes to New Hampshire for a new experience in her life. I wish it to be very successful and she has the best of luck and she will do very well.

 


 

 

Tuesday, October 1, 1991

 

A fair day. I got ready. Carmen and Bro came about 12. We went to Fryeburg Fair. Watched the horse pulling. I saw Kurtz Colby, a friend of Carmen’s. Brogan had a good time on all the rides she went on. She was such a good kid all day. Thought of Betty all day at her school. I hope all is okay. Anxious to hear from her tonight. A bad shower when we left up there. Got home at about 9 PM.

 

 

 

Wednesday, October 2, 1991

 

A dite cloudy this morning. Carmen took care of the chickens today. I made out most of the bills today and got the papers all read. Bro to school today.
