The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Tuesday, October 29, 1991

A nice day. Cold and windy. I did my ironing. Carmen gone to the doctors. Mark still working at Betty’s. I miss not seeing the kids. Very very seldom see Jeff.

Wednesday, October 30, 1991 Betty to dentist and had tooth out and the new one

Cold and windy. Billie gone to get hair cut. Carmen took him while she went shopping. Brogan gone to school. Saw the deer again this morning. Betty got a new tooth today. She looks so much better. 100% younger. In p.m. Dorothea came and brought Ruby Hill for a visit. It was very nice seeing her again. Carmen came today, washed the windows. She came and got the supper late in p.m. She is sick with a cold. Brogan still has cold. A very bad wind in Portland today, coastal flooding. Very bad. Cold.

Cloudy and raining here this morning. I did a wash, cleaned the oven. A lot of damage done by the heavy wind and rain. President Bush’s home in Kennebunk got damaged a lot. I didn’t do much, I did wash. Carmen getting ready for Halloween night. She and her kids came and BJ and Nick and Bro. They had a very good time, went all around and to the party at town hall. All told there were nine kids. Debbie and her four and a couple up the road. Heavy rains all evening at times.
