The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 24 - 27, 1970


Saturday, October 24, 1970 Kim sick

A very nice day. I done up regular work. Cleaned the cellar up, washed garage windows, cleaned the cars up. Went to the hospital in p.m. to see Carmen.  Es, Susan and Vince called. Called at Betty’s. They had two men working besides Walt. Got a lot done on the barn. Kim sick, to doctors.

Sunday, October 25, 1970

Carmen came home from hospital. Today Billie, Fern, Lloyd, Esther and I went on a trip to northern Maine. A very nice ride. Billie’s toe is very sore, swollen and dark. Called at Horton’s in evening to see Carmen and Kim. A little water came into well.



Monday, October 26, 1970

Bill didn’t work. It is cloudy and showery. Billie worked. Walt home in observance of Armistice Day and Bill. I washed at Betty’s. Water has come into our well some. Dorothea up a little while at suppertime. Jeff ate here. Then they rush back home so Jeff could go to scout meeting. Kim sick today, real sick.



Tuesday, October 27, 1970 Water in well

Water has come into well. Billie to dentist. He measured well this morning. I washed quite a few things this morning. I cleaned Billie’s bedroom. Dorothea came up to the garage with her car today. She called here and at Betty’s. Kim quite sick this PM. Gordon up to Walt’s and did some wiring.
