The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 21 - 24, 1971


Thursday, January 21, 1971 Milder

This morning the temperature was only down to eight below zero. It was clear in a.m. Cloudy in p.m. Dorothea called. Betty to town with Susan then she went away on business. She is quite discouraged. If only he would calm down and listen to her side of the case.



Friday, January 22, 1971

A nice day. I went down to Betty’s while she took Kim to school. We went to town. Betty did her shopping. Came home, I went down with her while she took care of her groceries. Came home. Fern came up, we had scallops for supper. I don’t eat them but they were good they said. Bill and I to town after supper. Deming’s came home with us for the evening.



Saturday, January 23, 1971 $5.52

Cloudy and snow in a.m. I went over to Aunt Ava’s, Fern, Ken, Delores, Es, Cliff, Fern and I. Billie D, Milan and Betty called. We cleaned up the house and got things taken care of, ready to pick things over and take care of. Milan came today for overnight. Nice and clear in p.m. Bill worked a few hours today plowing snow. Deming’s and R Smith here in eve. Listened to Mama’s recording’s.



Sunday, January 24, 1971

A nice day, mild. I done regular work. Dorothea’s folks came, also Betty’s family here for dinner. It was nice having them all here for dinner together. In late p.m. went to Susan’s for a party for Vince’s 2nd birthday.
