The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 22 - 24, 1970 Christmas Eve Blizzard

Tuesday, December 22, 1970

I went down to Betty’s. The tree is so pretty and loaded with nice gifts. Betty had some gifts come in the mail.

Wednesday, December 23, 1970 Desk came

A nice day but a lot of snow. Bill worked all night. Kim to school. Cliff took her and went after her. Betty and I worked like the dickens to get the last-minute things done for Christmas. Bill came home at noon to sleep, to get rested for another storm they say is coming. He came down to Betty’s, he and Cliff helped to get the Case out of the deep snow. A brand-new desk came today from Reliable Furniture for a Christmas present from Betty and Walt. I like it very much and it matches my other furniture. It is very pretty. Turkey came tonight.

Thursday, December 24, 1970 A BIG BLIZZARD

What a day this has been. A big heavy snowstorm evened high winds. We got about 20 inches of snow on top of the other bad storm that came. I worked all day preparing for Christmas. I made a layer cake, date filled pie, lemon sponge pies. Billie came home early. Was over two hours getting home from Raymond. Walt didn’t go to work. The house got buried in snow around where the wind blew in from the Northeast. All we got was a place broke in our yard for them to drive cars out to road. We couldn’t plan on company tonight. Bill home for supper and back to work in evening. Es, Cliff and Billie all WALKED over here, wow. We was glad to see them and had a good time. Bill came home, changed shoes,-a Christmas gift from Billie, back to work. Then Betty came up, we opened our gifts, all were so nice.

Blizzard can't keep Santa from arriving!

The Demings walked thru the Blizzard to Nanny's for Christmas Eve
