The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 9 - 12, 1971


Saturday, January 9, 1971

A beautiful day. I done up my work. Made rolls, put the beans in the oven. Bill and I to town to shop. Called at Jim’s TV. Billie and I down to Linwood Days to get some butter. Kennard and Delores went with us. Had a good baked beans supper.



Sunday, January 10, 1971

A cloudy snowy day but no snow accumulation. I worked on my scrapbook project. Bob and Pat called. Bill took the car out to change the battery. Billie put sand on the driveway. He went up to Chet’s and fixed his walk to the mailbox and his garage.


Monday, January 11, 1971

A nice cleared day, on the mild side. I went down to Betty’s to stay while she took Kim to school. She done her work up and vacuumed her whole house then we went to town shopping etc. Betty bought me a new tablecloth for kitchen table.










Tuesday, January 12, 1971

A nice day. I done my regular work. Down to Betty’s. We went to town. Betty did her shopping for Fern. When we came home, Kim and Zak stayed up with me. Betty cleaned her draws in her vault chest. We called at Ferns a little while. Billie came home sick tonight. Went to bed very early 6:30, with a bad headache.
