The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 1 - 4, 1971



Friday, January 1, 1971

This first day of 1971 dawned cloudy and gray. Snow flurries during the day and part of evening. Carmen, Bill and I watched the old year out and the new one in last night. Carmen up here all night also Esther and Cliff here today. We had a beef soup and Esther brought a lemon chiffon pie, it was good. Betty’s folks called. Also we got a call from Eve Whitney and Robert had an accident in his workshop. Got his fingers sawed badly. He is in NCM Hospital tonight. Betty, Es and I went down to see him. Bill and Cliff watched the game on TV. We watched Rose Bowl parade.



Saturday, January 2, 1971

A beautiful day, sunny and mild. I done regular work. Made rolls. Bill worked in a.m. Billie worked for Lawrence. I went to town to do my shopping. Robert came home.



Sunday, January 3, 1971

A nice sunny day. Bill and I down to Jean’s. We called at Gordon’s, Jean and Stan weren’t at home. We looked at antique catalogs at Gordon’s. Fern, Lloyd called. Woodrow Dobbins called. I wrote to Thena, Hilda and Betty Smith.




Monday, January 4, 1971

I done regular work. Down to Betty’s. We went to town and to Norway. Swapped Kim’s slippers. I did desk work in p.m. After supper Bill had to go back to work. Billie and I called to see Bob and Pat. It is sleeting tonight, very slippery.
