The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 21 - 24, 1970 Susan Has A New Son


Saturday, November 21, 1970

Partly cloudy showers, at times some sunshine. Did regular work. Billie, Billie Deming and I took Christie to Norway to Dr. Gauger’s. Had her shots, ears clean etc. I came home, called at Betty’s. They cemented the front of the barn.



Sunday, November 22, 1970 Sue to hospital

A nice day, not too cold. Bill worked at Walt’s. Dorothea and Dave came up. Dave bought the old red car. We called at Betty’s. Dorothea called to see Susan. Christopher Lewis Rager born at NCM hospital 6 pounds 9 ounces.




Monday, November 23, 1970

Cloudy. Warm. I did regular work. Down town in p.m. with Betty. Louise and children called at Betty’s. They called to see Susan at hospital. Bill worked at Walt’s in evening. Billie brought home turkey tonight.



Tuesday, November 24, 1970

I washed. Down to Betty’s. She moved the kids all downstairs to sleep. What a day’s work. A lot of moving. Dorothea called and she pitched in and helped. In evening I went to hospital to see Susan with Es.
