The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 17 - 20,1970 Carmen in Hospital


Saturday, October 17, 1970 Snow Flurries, Carmen to hospital

Clear this morning but awful cold and windy. Betty and Milan left for home early this morning. Gordon came up and worked on the ditch again this forenoon. Billie and Jeff here. Jeff stayed at Billie Deming’s last night. Billie Crook to garage in a.m., with Lawrence in p.m. Carmen to hospital for x-rays and blood test, is in pain etc.



Sunday, October 18, 1970

A sunny day, but very cold. Betty and Walt worked on the barn. Billie Crook discouraged about his car. Dorothea and David called and Jeff has been over to Esther’s since Friday night. Carmen still not good, she was in bed some, lame all over.



Monday, October 19, 1970 Carmen to hospital

20° this morning. I babysat today with Zak and Carmen while Betty took Kim to MM Center to be checked, her heart condition. Carmen home sick and very sick. When Betty got home, she took Carmen to NC Memorial Hospital, very sick. Rheumatic Fever symptoms she seems to have and the doctor (Richards) is afraid that is what she has. They are taking tests. Gordon came up and covered rest of ditch. Billie home all day. He worked on ditch too.



Tuesday, October 20, 1970 25° this morning

A nice day, on the cold side. I went down to Betty’s. I helped her do a dite of work. In p.m. Betty, Esther, Aunt Ava and I to town. Es, Betty and I called at the hospital to see Carmen. She isn’t  at all good, a fever. Sick to her stomach. Bill been awful lame today at work. I babysat tonight, also Fern and Es while Betty and Walt called on Carmen. Zak back walking good now. Billie to the hospital late tonight with a very lame and painful arm.
