The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 17 - 20, 1971


Sunday, January 17, 1971

25 below this morning. A very cold morning. 25 below here, 28 in some places. I took bath, did regular work. Bill went down, got Dot about 10:30. She seems to enjoy having a chance to relax. We had a roast beef dinner. She went home about 4 PM.



Monday, January 18, 1971 20 below

A very cold cold day. I washed. Hung the sheets out, dried some things inside. Betty took Kim to school. I stayed with Zak. We went to town to get Kim together. She and I. We called it Susan’s a little while, her water pipes was frozen.

Tuesday, January 19, 1971 22 below

I got my sheets in today. I babysat for Betty today while she visited all day at Dawn’s. Zak and Kim real good. Susan said her pipes froze again tonight before she went to bed.



Wednesday, January 20, 1971 25 below zero

A very cold morning. I went down to Betty’s while she took Kim to school. I washed. Billie and I over to Deming’s tonight. Johnny Cash had a good show on tonight.
