The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 10 - 13, 1970


Thursday, December 10, 1970

A beautiful day. I went down to Betty’s in late a.m. We did some wrapping and then we went to Norway. She did rest of her shopping. Came home, cooked a good fish chowder for supper. In evening Billie and I called at Fern’s. Betty called two.



Friday, December 11, 1970

A nice sunny day. I did regular work. Went down to Fern’s. Fern, Esther and I wrote thank you notes to people who contributed to Aunt Ava’s funeral. Came home, went down to Betty’s and we wrapped gifts. She and I to town, did her shopping and came home. Got supper. Billie, Fern and I to Norway. I did most of my shopping. Billie did some more. TV said we are going to get a big snowstorm tonight and tomorrow. Esther’s folks had a birthday supper for Susan. Susan 21 today.




Saturday, December 12, 1970

Moon shone all night and nice this morning. No snow as of yet. I done up regular work. Billie to work for Lawrence. Bill and I down to Dorothea’s. She and Dave have a very pretty home.

A cloudy dreary day. Billie and I back our Christmas cards. Cliff and Billie D got their Christmas tree. Fern, Lloyd called in late p.m. Fern awfully lame. It snowed lightly all day.
