The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 27- 30, 1962 Is Betty Pregnant??




Sunday, May 27, 1962

A nice sunny day, on the cool side. Bill and Billie got the ground ready and planted. Mama up to Stoneham cemetery with Kennard, Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis. Dot and Kennie called, gave me two (?) and trout. Planted garden.



Monday, May 28, 1962 LETTER FROM BET AND MIKE

A very nice wonderful day. I done up regular work. Washed and washed and washed. I cleaned the grain room in afternoon. Fern and Lloyd called. Letter from Betty. She may be pregnant. I sent a package to Esther. A word from Jean. Mom Crook died May 25, 1962 at age 82 years 11 months 26 days. I washed out in the grain room for first time.



Tuesday, May 29, 1962

Warm, sunny. I done up regular work. Cooked, picked greens. Blanche over, we fixed flowers. Mama and Blanche up to Waterford to cemetery. Fern and Lloyd called. I ironed. The insurance man called here tonight to take out hospital insurance on Bill and I. Ken Proctor will be the new agent here. A very nice day.



Wednesday, May 30, 1962

Hot and hot. I cleaned the playpen, churned, done up the regular work. Art Ward and family called today. In evening Bill and I to town and called at Fern’s. Fern and Lloyd called in a.m. Bill worked at Gordon’s all day. We cooked steaks out on the grill. Real good.
