The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 26 - 29, 1962



Tuesday, June 26, 1962

Nice today. Not too hot. I defrosted refrigerator, picked berries. Betty ironed. Blanche called in a.m. Mike picked most of the berries. I froze 4 quarts. It rained in PM. Betty didn’t feel too good today. In evening Arthur Andrews and family called, also Kennard came down to get some water and Mike’s dad, brother and sister called. TooMaine went up the tree. Mike and Betty down town with Bennie, Lou and kids. Picked 10 quarts strawberries.



Wednesday, June 27, 1962

Cloudy in a.m. Cleared and quite warm. I cleaned up all the downstairs and wiped all the floors. Brud came and brought his children. I babysat all afternoon while they went to Verna’s father’s funeral. In p.m. Betty and Mike to town. Betty got her some socks, shorts and tennis shoes. We picked more berries. Fern, Lloyd called. Holly Lyons and son called. Mr. McAllister cut the cows hoofs off tonight. Picked 14 quarts.



Thursday, June 28, 1962

A nice hot day. I cleaned up rest of the house. Put on some screens. In PM Blanche took Eva, Susan, Judy, Mike and I to Portland. Mike went to Fort Williams. Betty stayed home, made cake and cookies, got supper. After supper Bill and I took Betty and Mike up to Auburn. Picked 1 quart.



Friday, June 29, 1962

Hot. Bob Smith’s birthday. A very hot day. I washed, churned, picked berries. Done up the housework. Put on some more screens. In evening to town. Bennie and Lou brought back Betty and Mike. Mary Lou and Timmy came to stay with them overnight.
