The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 19 - 22, 1962 Dawn's Cottage Burns on Sebago Lake



Saturday, May 19, 1962

HOT HOT HOT in the 90s today. I cleaned Mama’s room. I cleaned up the whole house and washed all of the floors. I cooked and churned. In PM I went to town with Billie. Fern up for supper. Kennard called. After supper Billie and I sat out some plants and geraniums. Billie and I called to see Arts’s new baby.



Sunday, May 20, 1962

A nice day, not quite as warm as yesterday. I done up my housework and set out my plants etc. Bill worked at Gordon’s. Billie and Art helped Chet and brought Art’s cow up here. Bill and I took a short ride over to Denmark and down to Gordon and Sally’s. A cottage burned on Long Lake.



Monday, May 21, 1962

A very nice day. Warm and sunny. I very good drying day. I did a lot of extra washing. Hung the clothes out back for the first time. Dawn and George Parks cottage home on Sebago Lake burned today. Bill and I called at Ferns in evening. We went down to Fern and Lloyd’s shore lot. Called at Joan and Eric Jeness’s cottage. Fern came up and stayed till midnight.



Tuesday, May 22, 1962

Another nice DAY. Sunny and quite warm. I cleaned Billie’s room, done up my regular work. After supper did a big ironing. I also cleaned the cellar way. Kennard called. Blanche call. Art and two girls called. Fern and Lloyd called after seeing and talking with Mr. Sanborn about building a new home for them.
