The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 12- 14, 1962 Betty and Mike Arrive in Ohio

Tuesday, June 12, 1962

Cloudy and showers. I wrote to Esther and went to town to send Betty some more money, to help them get home. I settled the living room. I done a little more painting. Tonight we painted the kitchen floor. A guy, Paul Rand, from Harrison, brought a power riding lawnmower over tonight for them to try out. Bill down to Gordon’s again tonight. Thinking of Betty and Mike today and tonight. I hope Betty is all right.

Wednesday, June 13, 1962

Partly cloudy, not too warm. While I waited for the kitchen floor to dry, I did a lot of my odds and end jobs. Varnished rugs. Cleaned up the shed chamber. Worked in my flower gardens, trimmed grass etc. etc. We was able to walk on kitchen floor late p.m. Bill down to Gordon’s tonight. Billie home tonight for a week. Betty and Mike got to Esther’s around noon today. Will stay there tonight.

Thursday, June 14, 1962 Talked with Betty, Es and Susan

Partly cloudy. A call from Esther. Mike and Betty didn’t get to Cleveland until midnight last night. I have been thinking of them all day. It was good talking to all, Esther, Betty and Susan. I got the house all cleaned up today. Billie began his vacation. He got pigpen ready. Cleaned the cellar. Hauled the rubbish barrel down and dumped it. Blanche here today. Fern, Lloyd called, also in evening Kennard, Bob and Blanche. The kitty is having a good time. We got to meet Betty and Mike at 3:40 PM Saturday.
